Foster Carer Application - Rats
NOTE: It’s important to answer the questions below with honesty so that we can match the right foster rat(s) with the right foster carer. We do not expect all foster carers to be highly experienced or comfortable dealing with certain issues such as skittish behaviour or administering medication. Whilst we cannot guarantee that any rat will never require medication or develop a behavioural issue, we will do our very best to prevent you from fostering rats where issues such as these will arise if you prefer not to deal with them. Should they arise, we will provide guidance or relocate the rat(s) to another foster carer.

How did you find out about Rehome A Rat Melbourne?
*
Please provide a brief outline of your experience dealing with pet rats (if any):
*
For what reason(s) do you wish to foster rats?:
*
Do you currently have (or plan on having) any other animals in your care? If you have any other rats, what are their genders and ages?:
*
Do you have any gender or age preferences for fostering rats? (Note: it is fine to have no preferences):
*
Do you agree to house all male and female rats in your care separately in order to prevent pregnancy? (Note: if one gender is desexed, it is okay to house them together):
*
How many rats are you comfortable fostering at any given time? Please go into basic detail regarding how big a cage(s) you can fit and how many rats per cage (eg. one cage with two rats, two cages with up to three rats each etc):
*
Are you willing to foster rats that may require medication? Often rats require twice-daily doses for a two week period. (Note: Rehome a Rat Melbourne will provide this as well as guidance if it is not something you have experienced before):
*
Are you comfortable fostering rats that may display temperamental issues such as skittish behaviour or nipping? (Note: in most circumstances, except where distance does not permit, surrendered rats will go through an initial assessment period with a Rehome a Rat Melbourne team member to evaluate their health and temperament before being passed on to a foster carer, in order to prevent foster carers experiencing serious problems unexpectedly):
*
Do you agree to alert a Rehome a Rat Melbourne team member as soon as possible in the event that your foster rat(s) show any signs of pregnancy, illness or behavioural issues?:
*
Do you agree to consult a Rehome a Rat Melbourne team member regarding any health or behavioural issues with your foster rat(s) before discussing them in any public forums?:
*
Do you have access to any spare cages and/or carriers available for housing and transporting rats, or in the event that a rat needs to be separated from another? Please provide a basic description of their size including measurements. Alternatively you can email photos to admin@rehome-a-rat-melbourne.com:
*
Do you have access to a camera and are you willing to take and upload or email photos of your foster rat(s) that are of decent quality?:
*
Do you have access to a car and are you comfortable assisting with the collection and delivery of rats (within a reasonable distance) such as when they are surrendered or need to be transferred to another foster carer or to a veterinary appointment?:
*
In the event that a rat(s) you are fostering receives an adoption application, are you willing for the potential adopter to visit the rat(s) in their foster home with you, or organise the delivery of the rat(s) (within a reasonable distance) to their potential new home where you will liaise with the adopter and inspect the environment in which these rats may go to live in? In some circumstances this will include evaluating how rats interact with each other in the case of stranger rats being introduced. (Note: foster carers are never responsible for organising adoptions – only Rehome a Rat Melbourne team members perform these):
*
Do you agree to house the rat(s) you commit to fostering indefinitely until a suitable adopter comes along? If you can only foster for a certain period of time or plan on relocating a reasonable distance or have travel plans, please provide details below:
*
